Channa Masala

Channa battura is a famous north Indian dish. We use to stay in long queue in our canteen for hot battura with channa. There are various varieties of the channa masala. I am not sure which the authentic one is. I got this recipe from a video in you tube. I could find many other recipes too, which I am planning to try out next time.

Ingredients:

Channa                                   --    ½ cup
Tea Dust                                --    1 tsp
Onion                                      --    1 medium size
Green Chillies                       --    2 - 3
Tomato                                  --    1
Whole spices                         --   as required
Channa Masala                     --    1 tbsp
Coriander Leaves                 --   few
Oil                                           --   2 tbsp
Salt                                          --   to taste

Preparation of Channa Masala:

Make a small dumpling of the tea dust with a muslin cloth. Drop this along with the channa and cook it in a pressure cooker. Tea dust would give good colour to the channa.

Heat oil in a pan. Add the whole spices. Then add the chopped onion and green chillies. Saute until they are soft. Let it cool and grind them into a paste. Dip the tomato in boiling water. Peel off the skin and grind to make it into puree.

Mix the onion paste and the tomato puree in the pan. Add the channa masala. Fry until the raw smell of the masala goes off. Add channa to the gravy and let it boil. Make sure you add the water left in the pressure cooker to the gravy. Let it thicken to the gravy of required consistency. Turn off the fire and garnish with coriander leaves.

Serve it with hot poori, battura, chapathi, nan or parathas.
